Leanora McCracken was born August 27, 1934 in Edinburgh Scotland (weighing 12 pounds) to parents William and Winifred McCracken.  She graduated from school in Edinburgh. Lena met Carlton “Cart” Nyberg in Edinburgh at a dance in 1952 while he was temporarily stationed there in the US Navy.  After he left his deployment there, they continued to communicate by letter, leading up to their engagement in 1954.  She emigrated to Carlton’s hometown of Vining and they were married October 24, 1954.

They lived in the Twin Cities while Carlton attended Chiropractic School, and when he graduated in 1958 they moved to Benson to start his Chiropractic career.   Lena became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1962.  She went home to Scotland to visit her family every four years.

Cart and Lena raised their family in Benson, and moved to rural Starbuck in 1978.  She loved cooking and baking, and after the children were grown, Lena enrolled in the Dietary Manager program at Alexandria Technical School in 1984 and became a Dietary Manager.  She worked several years as the Food Service Supervisor at the Swift County Benson Hospital, and then worked several years as Director of Dietary Service at Glenwood Retirement Village.  She thoroughly enjoyed both jobs and the people she worked alongside.

Lena was an ardent walker when she lived in Benson and in the country. She was a superb housekeeper and always had a beautiful home that people admired.  She loved antique furniture and dishes and collected and restored many fine pieces she found at antique shops and auction sales.  She had several auction sales of her own to sell her excess.

Lena loved shopping and was an avid “garage saler.”  She couldn’t pass up a garage sale and continued to love going to them her entire life.  She also enjoyed going on bus trips to the casino, reading and doing jigsaw puzzles.  She loved hard work and always liked staying busy.

Cart and Lena moved back into Benson in 2008.  She then resided at Scofield Place in Benson from 2015 until she moved to Bemidji in September 2020. Lena was a devoted, faithful wife and mother and a wonderful grandmother.  She is survived by her children Bill (Kathy) of Sleepy Eye, Karen (Jeff) Bingham of Bemidji and Eric of Phoenix AZ.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild,  along with many nieces and nephews, and three sisters-in-law.

She is preceded in death by her husband Carlton in 2011, daughter Cynthia in 2017, her parents and four siblings.

Blessed be her memory.
