PRESIDENT PATTON PRESENTS the Citizen’s Award to State Rep. Betty Nuovo.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College President Laurie L. Patton presented the Bonnie and John McCardell Citizen’s Awards for outstanding community service to State Rep. Betty A. Nuovo, D-Middlebury, and posthumously to David M. Sears, the Cornwall public servant and voice of Middlebury College athletic teams. Middlebury honors local citizens for exemplary community service, volunteerism and engagement with community issues in a tradition that dates to the college’s bicentennial year in 2000. Nominations come from members of the community, and a committee of faculty and staff makes the final...

FRED KNIFFIN
MIDDLEBURY — It was in March that Dr. Fred Kniffin agreed to assume what was then the unenviable hot seat as Porter Medical Center’s interim CEO. Porter employees and the greater community were up in arms about recent layoffs, financial problems, physician defections and the controversial tenure of Lynn Boggs, who had just resigned. What a difference seven months can make. Kniffin, during his brief stint as Porter’s top executive, has helped stop the proverbial bleeding at Porter medical Center. The organization recently won state approval for a very conservative fiscal year 2017 budget....

BRISTOL — Classic car owners were in for a treat at the 12th annual Better L8 Than Never car show, held on Sept. 25 in Bristol. The event is co-hosted by the Addison County Chamber of Commerce and the Snake Mountain Cruisers, a Vermont classic car club based in New Haven. Perhaps it was the warm weather and clear skies, or else just the draw of the slick lines and careful care of some of the nicest classic cars in the area, The full text of this article is only available to online subscribers. The political bomb that dropped over the weekend did not, as many expected, explode at Sunday night’s second debate between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Rather it hit Friday night with the release of a video in which Trump speaks lewdly and openly about his boorish behavior with women. Those comments, extensively covered by the media, caused dozens of Republican leaders to drop their support of their party’s candidate. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan publicly disinvited Trump to a Saturday political event in Wisconsin, and even...
I recently attended a forum in Vergennes to hear the candidates who are running for Addison 3 House of Representatives. The contrast of the two parties and their candidates was starkly clear. To sum it up, the Democratic candidates, Diane Lanpher and Fritz Langrock, think that all is well. I appreciate their positive outlook but what is lacking is the reality of the situation that the beautiful state of Vermont now finds itself. Sen. Ayer has my vote. I have worked closely with Claire in our community and in the world of state politics. She is a great listener with great values and a very hard worker for us. But the most important thing to say about Claire is that I trust her. I trust that she will work hard to make our great state even better.
